NORTHERN LIGHTS: The Northern Lights are visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many natural wonders, it is an ephemeral spectacle – the Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event. For the best photos we recommend using a tripod.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Tromsø - Coastal Voyage

Arrival in Tromsø where you pick-up your rental car (not included in price) to drive to the city center. After your arrival you may wish to explore this Arctic city known as “Paris of the North”. Tromsø is the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle and is home to the world’s northernmost university, brewery and cathedral. At 6:30pm you depart Tromsø sailing north to Honningsvåg. Dinner and overnight on board Hurtigruten in an unspecified outside cabin, car on board included.

Day 2: Arrival in Honningsvåg and North Cape

Breakfast on board the Hurtigruten, arrival in Honningsvåg at 11:45am. Upon arrival in Honningsvåg, join an excursion to mainland Europe’s most northern point, the North Cape. This is a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically 300 meters from the sea, and you gaze out with nothing but water between you and the frozen wastes surrounding the North Pole. Overnight at Scandic Hotel Bryggen or similar.

Day 3: Honningsvåg – Karasjok

Breakfast at the hotel and departure. Today you will drive south to the area known as the capital of the Sami, Karasjok. Your day is at leisure to discover Karasjok. Tonight you will stay at Engholm's Husky Lodge situated next to Karasjohka river, 6 km outside of Karasjok. The designed log houses were built by Sven – the owner himself – and have a special charm. Sven has made all the interior furnishing and decoration in order to create a unique and personal atmosphere in each house. Enjoy the wood heated sauna and the very popular outdoor hot tub (not included). Dinner and overnight in the cosy and authentic Engholm’s Husky Lodge in your own private cabin with private bathroom.

Day 4: Dog Sledding Excursion

Breakfast at the lodge and time for one of the tour’s highlights! Drive your "own" dog team during this magical daytrip. This excursion includes a barbeque lunch on an open fire. The tour goes far off the beaten track and provides an interesting and unique dog sledding experience. Sven’s farm consists of 40-50 highly trained sled dogs for long-distance racing and tours. The tour will last approximately four hours and the actual ride will be about one hour. Afterward, relax at the lodge or enjoy the wood heated sauna and the very popular outdoor hot tub (not included).

Day 5: Karasjok – Saariselkä

Breakfast at the lodge. Today you will leave Norway and enter Finland. Your accommodation for the next two nights will be at Kakslauttanen. Overnight in traditional log cabins with your own fireplace and sauna. The snow and igloo village also offers an opportunity for guests to overnight in ice or glass igloos (please advise upon registration if you wish to upgrade to a glass igloo). At Kakslauttanen you can enjoy a variety of winter activities. Dinner and overnight in a traditional log cabin at Kaksaluttanen Igloo Village.

Transfer by private vehicle from the hotel to the safari office. At the safari office you will receive full equipment, including thermal suit, boots, socks, gloves, balaclava and helmet. An all-important lesson follows. When everybody is ready the safari trail begins with a drive up to the beautiful Kaunispää fell, 436 m above sea level. At the top of this fell you can enjoy the magnificent views of the area below. The trail then continues through the beautiful, mystical forest. This safari excursion is two hours long and includes an en-route coffee break. Two persons can share one snowmobile and take turns in driving or you can request one for sole occupancy at a supplementary cost. This safari provides an everlasting memory of true excitement in Finnish Lapland! Return to Kakslauttanen for dinner and overnight in traditional log cabin.

Day 7: Saariselkä – Rovaniemi
