NORTHERN LIGHTS: The Northern Lights are visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many natural wonders, it is an ephemeral spectacle – the Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event. For the best photos we recommend using a tripod.

Tour Itinerary

Day 3: Rovaniemi

Transfer from Rovaniemi train station to the Arctic Treehouse hotel, your accommodation for the coming two nights. The concept of Arctic Treehouse hotel has its roots in fragile arctic nature, the fairy tale world of Santa Park, and northern culture and heritage. All the buildings are made of Finnish wood, a traditional, sustainable and renewable material. The green roof helps in managing urban runoff and brings the building’s footprint’s worth of vegetation back to the construction site. After check-in you can use the rest of the day explore Rovaniemi and experience its winter activities such as reindeer safaris, husky safaris and snowmobile safaris. Dinner and overnight at the Arctic Treehouse Hotel.

After breakfast, a transfer will take you from Rovaniemi to Axelsvik port, located in Båtskärsnäs. You board the impressive ice breaker and get ready for your three-hour cruise in the frozen waters of the Bothnian sea. The cruise is guided, and you have the chance to visit the engine rooms as well as the captain’s bridge. During the stop, you can walk on the frozen ice, and for those seeking a little more adventure, in survival suits you can swim in the frozen sea. After the cruise, transfer to Kemi.
