NORTHERN LIGHTS: The Northern Lights are visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many natural wonders, it is an ephemeral spectacle – the Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event. For the best photos we recommend using a tripod.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Tromsø

Arrival in Tromsø per independent arrangements (recommend Flybussen Airport Shuttle or Tromsø Taxi). Check in at the Clarion Hotel The Edge or similar. Balance of day on own to explore Tromsø. Sights of interest include the Polar Museum, Northern Light Planetarium and Tromsø Museum. The arctic city of Tromsø is the world’s most northern university town and the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle. The city lies between the sharp craggy peaks of the Lyngen Alps, and combines wild scenery with urban life. Due to the city’s location right in the middle of the planet’s Northern Light’s belt, Tromsø offers the world’s best chances of spotting the Northern Lights. Overnight at hotel.

Day 2: Tromsø & Northern Lights Hunt

Breakfast at the hotel and day at own leisure. In the evening you depart on a chasing the Northern lights excursion. During this tour, your guide will do his/her utmost to find the best Northern lights show and if you are within driving distance, stop at a traditional lavu where you can roast marshmallows and enjoy your snowy surroundings. Return to hotel for overnight.

Day 3: Tromsø – Coastal Voyage

Breakfast at the hotel, day at your leisure for a new safari maybe with huskies or sightseeing tour of the Arctic capital before check in for your next adventure – on board Hurtigruten. Enjoy a beautiful north cruise along the spectacular Norwegian coastline. As the journey to Kirkenes hugs the coastline you visit remote settlements which rely on the Hurtigruten ships to maintain contact with the rest of Norway. Departure from Tromsø at 18:30. Overnight and dinner on board Hurtigruten in unspecified outside cabin (2 nights).

Day 4: The North Cape

After a short stop in Hammerfest, your journey will continue to Honningsvåg. Breakfast is served onboard the ship. From Honningsvåg an excursion to mainland Europe’s most northerly point, North Cape is included. This is a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically 300 meters from the sea. Continue onboard until you reach Kirkenes, a mere 10km from the Russian border. Overnight and dinner onboard Hurtigruten in unspecified outside cabin.

Day 5: Kirkenes, King Crab Safari and Snow Hotel

While you sleep, the ship continues sailing east along the Varanger peninsula, past Båtsfjord and Vardø. At breakfast time, you will pass by Vadsø, the administrative center of Finnmark. It was from here that the Arctic explorers Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth began their flights over the North Pole in the airship “Norge”. At 9:45am, you will arrive in Kirkenes. This is the turning point for the Hurtigruten voyage, and this fascinating little town allows a tantalizing glimpse into life in this remote region of Norway. At 1:00pm you are met by a fisherman and will be provided with warm clothes, boots and mittens before you set out to be a fisherman of king crabs for the day. The big catch, the king crab, will be served as lunch at a home of one of the fishermen. The duration of the tour is four hours. After the tour you will be met and transferred to the Kirkenes Snow Hotel. Overnight and dinner at Kirkenes Snow Hotel.

Day 6: Kirkenes - Depart

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer by minibus back to town. Rest of your day at leisure and departure from Kirkenes according to your own itinerary (airport transfer not included).
