NORTHERN LIGHTS: The Northern Lights are visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many natural wonders, it is an ephemeral spectacle – the Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event. For the best photos we recommend using a tripod.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Longyearbyen

After your arrival to Longyearbyen’s airport you can catch the airport bus that will take you to Basecamp Trappers Hotel, were you can leave your luggage behind (for your night at the Trappers station, you will only need a minimum of personal items). Time on own to explore the town or check out one of the many restaurants for lunch. At 7:00pm, meet your guide and drive to the Trappers station which is located approx. 10km outside of Longyearbyen. At the Trappers hut, enjoy a 2-course dinner while your guide tells stories about the hunting traditions in Svalbard. Accommodation will be in the secondary station, which is a small hut decorated as the small hunting cabins you find around the island. Your guide will be nearby and function as your polar bear guard for the night. As will our 80 Alaskan Huskies.

Day 2: Northern Lights & Dog Sledding

We start the day with breakfast in the hut. If the snow conditions are good, we harness the dogs for a sledge trip in Bolter valley. Your guide will of course give you instructions. With less snow we’ll go for a hike instead. With the Trappers station located outside of Longyearbyen, means we have less light pollution, and better conditions for spotting northern lights. Svalbard in one of the few places you can spot northern lights at daytime. After the trip, we head back to Longyearbyen, and check in at Trappers Hotel. We recommend dinner at Kroa restaurant next door. Accommodation in double rooms at Trappers hotel.

The guide will teach you the principles of snowshoeing, and determines the route depending on weather and local conditions. Along the way, we will enjoy a hot drink and the breathtaking, dark silence. We will have great view of Advent valley. Your guide will tell stories about the time mining was the main activity in the city. We recommend you to try Huset restaurant for your evening dinner. The reception can help you make reservations.
