ITINERARY – 12 DAYS
DAY 1 BERGEN
Arrival in Bergen according to your own itinerary. Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and the world’s only city surrounded by 7 mountains and 7 fjords. Attractions in Bergen include the Hanseatic Bryggen Harbour, Fløibanen Funicular, Troldhaugen, the Fish and Flower market, Bergen Aquarium and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum). Overnight at the Clarion Admiral Hotel or similar in Bergen’s city center.
DAY 2 BERGEN – VOSS [B,D]
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning free in Bergen. In the afternoon, pick up your rental car (not included in the price) and depart Bergen. Drive from Bergen heading in a northeast direction to Voss. Balance of your day is free to explore this charming community or enjoy an adventure such as white-water rafting, kayaking or hiking in the nearby mountains. If time allows, you may wish to drive to Vik to tour the Hopperstad Stave Church, one of Norway’s 28 remaining stave churches or enjoy a sample of goat cheese in the fjord-side village of Undredal. Dinner and overnight at Fleischer’s Hotel or similar.
DAY 3 VOSS [B,L,D]
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, enjoy a Norway in a Nutshell Excursion. You can leave your car behind as you travel by boat, train and bus on this exciting excursion through the fjord country. Begin with a bus ride to Gudvangen. Arrive in Gudvangen at 11:23am. Upon arrival in Gudvangen, visit the Viking Valley to see the recreated Viking Village. Enjoy a private lunch served in a Viking house. After lunch, board the ferry for a cruise on the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandfjord to Flåm. Depart Flåm on board the famous Flåm Railway. Ascend 2800 feet with 13 miles past thundering waterfalls to the mountaintop station of Myrdal. Change to the Oslo/Bergen Railway and return to Voss. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
DAY 4 VOSS – GEIRANGER [B,D]
Breakfast at the hotel. Depart Voss and drive to Flåm. Proceed through the world’s 2nd longest tunnel from Aurland to Lærdal. Continue in a northern direction via Luster to Geiranger. Weather and time permitting, you may wish to drive to Dalsnibba Viewpoint for a view of the Geirangerfjord which was added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 2005 and is truly a spectacular sight with its waterfalls and steep hills. Dinner and overnight at Union Hotel in fjord view rooms or similar (two nights).
DAY 5 GEIRANGER [B,D]
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning enjoy a cruise along the Geirangerfjord passing the famous Seven Sisters Waterfall. Balance of day free. We recommend a visit at the Norwegian Fjord Centre, where you can learn how people lived along the steep edges of the fjords. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
DAY 6 GEIRANGER – TROLL ROAD – HÅHOLMEN [B,D]
Breakfast at the hotel. Depart Geiranger by car up the Eagle Road which offers panoramic view of the Geirangerfjord. A short ferry crossing will bring you to Linge where you will continue by car to the Troll Road, one of Norway’s best-known tourist attractions. The road has 11 turns and the highest point is 858 meters above sea level. Dramatic, exciting and the ultimate nature experience – this is the best way to describe it. From Åndalsnes the drive continues in northern direction across the Langfjord in direction of Molde before arriving in Håholmen, which is located at the Atlantic Road – a stunning drive, rated as one of the best road trips. Dinner and overnight at Håholmen Havstuer.
DAY 7 HÅHOLMEN – TRONDHEIM [B]
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning will take you further on the Atlantic road. This road zigzags across low bridges that jut out over the sea. Follow the sharp turns and wild nature all the way to Kristiansund. Continue to Trondheim, Norway’s 3rd largest city. The city was founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in 997 BC and was Norway’s first capital. Today, it continues to be the coronation city where Norway’s Kings from Harald Hårfagre (10th century BC) to King Harald V (1991-) have been crowned and blessed. We recommend a visit at the Nidaros Cathedral. Other sights of interest are Kristiansten Fortress, the Monk’s Island, Trøndelag Open Air Museum and Stiftsgården – the Royal Residence in Trondheim. We also recommend a stroll in Bakklandet, located on the east bank of the river Nid. Here you will find old wooden buildings which were formerly worker’s dwellings but are now partly restored as homes or charming shops and restaurants. Overnight at Scandic Nidelven Hotel.
DAY 8 TRONDHEIM [B]
Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy a full day in this former Viking capital. You may wish to explore the city by foot or take a drive to Stiklestad, site of the Battle of 1030 which led to the death of St. Olav and the acceptance of Christianity in Norway. Overnight at hotel.
DAY 9 TRONDHEIM – LILLEHAMMER [B]
Breakfast at hotel. Depart Trondheim and drive south toward Lillehammer. En route, you may wish to visit the wooden mining town of Røros, which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for it’s well-preserved buildings. In Lillehammer, you can visit the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics and perhaps catch some Olympic hopefuls in training. We also recommend a visit to Maihaugen Open Air Museum, which tells the story of the people in Gudbrandsdalen Valley during the last 300 years of life between the wars and of homes and domestic environments in the 20th century. Overnight at the Scandic Lillehammer Hotel or similar.
DAY 10 LILLEHAMMER – OSLO [B]
Breakfast at hotel. Today marks your last day of driving through Norway. As you continue your journey south to Oslo, we suggest a visit to the Hamar for a chance to see the unique Glass Cathedral. Upon arrival in Oslo, return rental car. Balance of day free. Overnight at the Thon Opera Hotel or similar.
DAY 11 OSLO [B]
Breakfast at hotel. Day free to explore Norway’s capital city on your own or you can choose to join a city sightseeing tour. Suggested visits include the Vigeland Sculpture Park; Resistance Museum and Akershus Castle; the Fram and Kon-Tiki Museums and the Norwegian Folk Museum. You can also walk along the top of the Oslo Opera House for a fantastic view of the city and fjord. Overnight at hotel.
DAY 12 OSLO [B]
Tour ends following breakfast at hotel.
